efinitely, his is one of the most handsome faces that had ever graced the local silver screen. With his very refined features (angelic face, flawless skin and winsome smile) more enhanced by a considerable height impossible not to draw instant attention, indeed, Matthew Mendoza is the epitome of a genuine leading man. The cameras loved his every angle. He just smiles and the sun comes out. So, it wasn't really surprising then for the appealing guy to make waves in the ‘biz in no time at all.
An Impressive Start
If remembered, he became one of Viva Films' most sought-after male leads during his peak and was able to work with some of the industry's accomplished actresses. Who would ever forget him in his introductory project Dyesebel opposite Charlene Gonzales? After the said hit potboiler, their team up returned in the light romance Brides Maids and in the heavy drama Ikaw Naman Ang Iiyak, an all-star cast that also featured Dawn Zulueta, Shery Cruz and Gary Estrada.
With Ina Raymundo, he did Sabado Nights and the suspense-thriller Lihim. Tatlo… Magkasalo and Nag-aapoy Na Laman gave him the opportunity to share stellar billing with Ara Mina. In Nag-iisang Ikaw, he lighted up the screen with Mikee Cojuangco and Keempee de Leon. As an understanding groom to a woman who has a child with a gay in the Lorna Tolentino-Eric Quizon-Albert Martinez starrer Pusong mammon, he was again noticeable. Then, there's the unforgettable experience of working with the Megastar Sharon Cuneta in Nang Iniwan Mo Ako that simply added prestige to his status in the industry as one every promising showbiz denizen.
But despite his impressive filmography, his stay in the limelight was kinda' short. Many felt he could've accomplished more had he stayed active in the scene. But Matthew had more important priorities then that his acting career temporarily took a backseat. He got married and focused on managing a lucrative business in his native Palawan . But based on latest developments, it seems that the still good-looking father of three can't just turn his back on show business as he's gradually making his presence felt once again in the circuit.
Reminiscing his early days in showbiz, Matthew says he really enjoyed the experience.
“That's true! Actually, it was in 1995 when I got discovered. It was Jojo Veloso who saw my potential and signed me up to be part of his talent agency Philmoda. Before the big break in Dyesebel came along, I appeared in various commercials first. In my six-year stay in the business, I have many fond memories to remember.
“I enjoyed making Dyesebel for one. We were filming in different scenic spots that were so soothing and calming to my senses. I was also excited and at the same time nervous when the offer to play as Sharon 's love interest in Nang Iniwan Mo Ako came. It was one grand experience since Sharon and Albert Martinez are very good actors. It was an honor to share the screen with them. And all the movies I made, I really enjoyed ‘cause they opened new opportunities and challenges to me,” says Matthew in a recent interview.
Interestingly, what are the things that he likes and dislikes in showbiz?
“Oh, I love the work, meeting different people and discovering new places for shows and shootings. There are a few things I don't like or agree with in the ‘biz, but I can't say that I hate these things, I just accept them as part and parcel of the field.”
The public felt that his leaving the scene then was too sudden and abrupt.
“Well, 2001 was my sixth year in showbiz and that was the year I decided to put my showbiz career on hold. I had other priorities then like family and business. Also, during that time, I was at an age that was too young to play father roles but old to play ‘bagets' parts,” the appealing guy explains.
Happy Family Life
Early this year, he gradually made his presence felt once again.
“Yes, I just wrapped up work at a regular television program in GMA-7, the afternoon drama series Agawin Mo Man Ang Lahat that started February. I'm also part of a new film starring Maricel Soriano titled Inang Yaya under Unitel. I have also been guesting in various boob tube shows in different networks such as in O-HA of ABC 5.
“It really helps to have a supportive family beside you. Yes, I always have my wife's support and in turn, she'll also have mine. We make it a point to discuss every decision we've to make regarding our family and once we decide on what to do, we stand by each other. You see, I've got a wonderful family now. My wife Angie and I are blessed with three adorable kids: Bea, Kyla and my youngest Luke who looks a lot like me.”
Clearly, life for Matthew now is different.
“It's more simple at present and I enjoy spending time with the kids but I do miss show business. My life then and now cannot be compared ‘cause they give me different highs. I'm in Palawan most of the time with my family and it's a quiet, peaceful and relaxed existence.”
Future Plans
To those who don't know yet, the angle-faced star is a successful businessman in his province.
“It's one vital reason why I decided to lay low from showbiz since it demands my time. I manage our tourist inn and restaurant in Puerto Princesa. Tourism in Palawan is great this year. Business is doing very well in spite of the worsening economy in the country,” happily informs Matthew.
Until now, he still possesses that leading man look. What is his secret?
“My wife and my kids keep me young. I also try not to be stressed out and to focus on what's essential in life. One great factor too is the relaxing atmosphere in Palawan .
As his parting shot, Matthew assures the public that he would be around and that…
“I have changed yet remain the same. I've matured emotionally. I am more confident and focused now and I know what I want!” - - |
